The house was simple. The family had very little. Worn walls, a dirt yard, and the unmistakable signs of a household working hard simply to make it through each day.

Inside, Wayan Ada’s parents spoke quietly about their hopes for their children. His father works as a daily construction laborer, never knowing exactly how much work tomorrow will bring. Meanwhile, his mother spends long days working in the local salak plantations. Together they are raising three children with limited resources but unlimited love.

Then, in the distance, we saw him, slowly making his way home from school. One step at a time. Supported by a walking stick.

Wayan was born with only one leg. At just 12 years old, he faces challenges that most people would struggle to imagine.

However, what we noticed first was not his disability. It was his smile. And it was his eyes: bright, determined, fearless. The kind of eyes that tell you a story before a single word is spoken.

At that moment, we knew we had met someone extraordinary.

A Childhood Defined by Courage

For many children, walking to school is a routine part of life. For Wayan, however, it is an achievement. Every day requires effort, every journey requires determination, and every challenge requires resilience.

Still, he rarely complains. Instead, he focuses on what he can do rather than what he cannot.

Over the following months, Wayan joined Bali Sehat’s Fun English Program. Week after week, he arrived eager to learn, eager to participate, and eager to grow.

Even when other children became tired, Wayan kept going. When lessons became difficult, he kept trying. And when obstacles appeared, he kept smiling.

As we learned more about him, we came to understand that his greatest strength was not physical. It was his spirit.

Supporting Children with Disabilities in Bali: The Dream of an Athlete

One day, we asked Wayan what he wanted to become, and his answer surprised us.

He wanted to be an athlete, not despite his disability, but because he believed he could.

His dream was not small. Nor was it cautious. It was bold, and it was entirely sincere.

In a world that often tells children what they cannot do, Wayan had chosen to focus on what might still be possible. That kind of courage deserves a chance. Furthermore, it deserves support and people willing to stand beside him.

So we began searching for ways to help. First, we explored educational opportunities and specialized programs that could better support his future. Eventually, we identified a path forward through YPAC Bali in Jimbaran, a school with extensive experience helping children with physical disabilities develop their full potential.

Today, Wayan studies at YPAC Bali, a school dedicated to helping children with physical disabilities reach their full potential.

However, there was one challenge: the family could not afford it alone.

How Bali Sehat Helps Children with Disabilities in Bali

What happened next reminded us why hope is never a one person journey.

As Wayan’s story began to spread, something remarkable happened. People listened. People cared. And people acted.

Consequently, support began arriving from individuals who had never met Wayan. Families offered encouragement, donors offered assistance, and friends shared his story. Gradually, strangers became supporters.

One by one, kind hearted people stepped forward to help create a future that previously seemed out of reach.

They were moved not by pity, but by possibility. They saw what we saw: a young boy with extraordinary determination, a child worth investing in, and a future worth believing in.

A New Chapter for a Child with Disability in Bali

On July 14, 2026, Wayan’s life entered a new chapter. That morning, Bali Sehat accompanied him and his family on the journey to YPAC Bali.

There were many emotions that day: excitement, anxiety, pride, sadness, and hope, all at once.

For the first time, Wayan would be leaving home to pursue an education designed to help him thrive.

His mother wiped away tears. His father struggled to find words. Meanwhile, his younger siblings held tightly to their brother. For a family that has overcome so much together, saying goodbye, even temporarily, was never going to be easy.

Indeed, many of us found ourselves wiping away tears as well.

Yet amidst the emotion, one thing stood out: Wayan was ready.

The same determination we had seen months earlier was still there, along with the same courage, the same belief, and the same dream.

Rather than focusing on what he was leaving behind, he was focused on where he was going.

And as he moved forward toward his future, we were reminded once again why we call him our Little Champion.

Beyond One Child: More Children with Disabilities in Bali

Wayan’s story is unique, but it is also universal. Across Bali, many children with disabilities face similar challenges every single day. Throughout Indonesia, in fact, there are thousands of children carrying dreams larger than the obstacles they face. Some live with disabilities, some grow up in poverty, and many face both.

Yet within these children are future teachers, nurses, doctors, athletes, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. Their potential is enormous; what they often lack is opportunity.

Sometimes, the difference between a life limited by circumstance and a life transformed by possibility is surprisingly small: a scholarship, a mentor, a sponsor, a school, or simply a person willing to say, “I believe in you.”

Building the Future Together
