Islamic New Year 1448 H

June 16 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Islamic New Year marks the beginning of Muharram the first and one of the most sacred months of the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the Hijra, the historic migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Mecca to Medina, which became the foundation of the Islamic lunar calendar, known as the Hijri calendar. The Islamic New Year 1448 AH is expected to fall on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. Ashura, observed on the 10th of Muharram, will follow on June 25, 2026. As with all Islamic dates, the exact day is subject to the official moon sighting and may vary by one to two days depending on location. ASEANdoaj

Unlike secular new year celebrations, the Islamic New Year is traditionally a time of spiritual reflection, gratitude, and religious observance rather than large public festivities. Many Muslims spend this time in prayer, reciting the Quran, and reflecting on the meaning of the Hijra — the sacrifice, resilience, and faith it required. doaj

Muharram is also one of Islam’s four sacred months. As Allah says in the Quran: “Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve lunar months from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.” These four months are Dhul-Qadah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.
